Low voltage lighting transformers.
We offer a three year warranty on our toroidal lighting transformer products.
Each is CE marked, dimmable, with thermal protection.
All lighting transformers are safety tested to BSEN61046, RFI complies with BSEN55014.
Our lighting Transformers are fully protected against short circuit or overload with an auto-reset circuit breaker.
- If you are needing to operate 6 x 35W halogen lamps, you first need to ascertain if the lamps are 12 or 24 volt.
The vast majority of halogen lighting applications are 12 volt but you are best to check. - Taking the wattage rating of the lamps, in this case 35W, we multiply this by the number of lamps you are going to be running in the one area.
5 lamps x 35 watt each = 175 watts. - Watts are directly related to VA, that is; volts(V) x amps(A) = watts.
So, for 5 x 35 watt halogen lamps you will need a transformer that has a VA (or watt) rating of at least 175VA.
As there are no 175VA low voltage halogen lighting transformers you would select the next highest VA rated transformer - 200VA. - 5 lamps @ 35W each

- It is fine to run lamps of different wattages on the same transformer. You need only add up the watts as outlined above to select the transformer required.
- You can install a transformer that has a far higher VA rating than you require. You may take this option if you are thinking you will be expanding the circuit to include more lamps in the future. But, as the load on a lighting transformer decreases, the output voltage of the transformer increases. This means the life of the low voltage halogen lamps will be shortened. As long as you are using at least half of the VA rating of the transformer it won't have an adverse effect on the life of your lamps.
- The next consideration is where you are installing the transformer.
If the location is exposure to moisture in the form of condensation, rain, steam or splashing you will need a transformer that has a IP rating* relevant to the installation environment. - If space is a major consideration, then the electronic halogen lighting transformers are a compact and inexpensive option, although the highest rated model is 105VA.
*IP Rating System (“Ingress Protection” code)
Is the standard relating to the performance of enclosures in resisting the ingress of water and foreign objects.
BS EN 60529:1992 Specification for degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP code).
Following the IP tag are two numbers. Eg: IP68
The first relates to the protection offered by the enclosure to solid objects and dust.
0 - Non-protected
1 - Protected against solid foreign objects of 50 mm diameter and greater
2 - Protected against solid foreign objects of 12.5 mm diameter and greater
3 - Protected against solid foreign objects of 2.5 mm diameter and greater
4 - Protected against solid foreign objects of 1.0 mm diameter and greater
5 - Dust-protected
6 - Dust-tight
The second number indicates the protective qualities of the enclosure to the ingress of water.
0 - Non-protected
1 - Protected against vertically falling water drops
2 - Protected against vertically falling water drops as the enclosure is tilted 15 degrees
3 - Protected against spraying water
4 - Protected against splashing water
5 - Protected against water jetting
6 - Protected against powerful water jetting
7 - Protected against temporary immersion
8 - Protected against continuous immersion
